Three snowmobilers safe after snowmobile goes through the ice near Lewisporte

On December 31, 2017, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Lewisporte RCMP responded to a call that three snowmobilers had gone through the ice on Island Pond, off Route 340 near Lewisporte.

The three snowmobilers went into the water approximately 150 feet from the shoreline and cabin. They were able to walk out of the water due to the depth. Two other people from a nearby cabin went into the water to assist.

All five people are safe and were transported to hospital for medical treatment.

Lewisporte RCMP would like to caution snowmobilers to always check ice thickness and avoid bodies of water that may not yet be frozen. Exercise extreme caution and always carry emergency equipment. Always wear a helmet and never ride alone. Snowmobiling and alcohol/drugs don't mix – don't ride impaired.
