It's an official anniversary date for the Cavendish Beach Music Festival, with year 10 being celebrated July 6-9. RCMP have worked closely with the community and the event organizers over the years with an eye towards public safety for drivers, pedestrians, campers and concert goers. This year there are a few changes that everyone needs to be aware of in order for the event to run smoothly.

Traffic has always been a focus for RCMP and this year, the established traffic system that has been in place for the past few years continues. There are lot of visitors in the area during the event, many of whom are walking to and from their accommodations or campsites. A "traffic plan" creates a safe entrance and exit to the venue and drivers and walkers are urged to follow the instructions provided.

There are literally thousands of walkers and vehicles concentrated in the departure which can be the most challenging time each evening. Nearing the end of each evening of the festival, traffic exiting the east side parking lot (Avonlea side) will have to exit East (towards the Cavendish corner/North Rustico-New Glasgow direction) and the traffic exiting the west side will head towards Stanley Bridge. There is no option for changes and drivers need to be aware that each parking lot has designated directional departures to ensure vehicle and pedestrian safety.

There are clear maps indicating community and venue traffic as well as a venue site map on the Cavendish Beach Music Festival web page, under the "Travel + Lodging" tab, click here.

Staff Sergeant Shane Hubley, District Commander for Queens District RCMP stated, "Safety is our focus for the RCMP. We want to ensure that everyone has the best time possible and to do that, it's important people plan ahead as much as possible. It might not be something you think of right away, but knowing where you are headed (or where your children, friends are headed) for the weekend and traffic access in general is one of them. Drop off and pickup should be planned well in advance and heeding the direction of those on site is important as no exceptions will be made."

Beyond traffic, be sure to carry your identification with you at all times. The bracelet system has changed somewhat this year, but the bracelet is NOT your ID. It's important that you have proper ID at all times and if you are underage, no liquor. Providing liquor to a minor will result in charges under the PEI Liquor Control Act. Also, it's illegal to consume alcohol in parking lots, while walking, or anywhere outside, off of your premises.

And finally, still on the topic of safety ~ use transportation that has been certified for the event. Do not simply jump in a vehicle ~ you are taking a big risk by doing so.
