Newfoundland and Labrador RCMP remind motorists of their obligations to yield the right-of-way to all emergency vehicles traveling with emergency lights and sirens activated.

These vehicles include police vehicles, fire trucks and ambulances. If these vehicles are traveling with emergency equipment activated, it is for an emergency where delays in travel could be critical.

Upon the immediate approach of an emergency vehicle with activated lights and sirens, the driver of a vehicle must:

  • yield the right-of-way to the emergency vehicle
  • immediately pull over to the right-hand side parallel to the road, clear of an intersection
  • stop and remain in that position until the emergency vehicle has passed.

It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to fail to yield to an emergency vehicle, with a first-time fine of $390 and two demerit points.
