RCMP officially opens new Twillingate detachment

Today, the Twillingate Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was the site of a grand opening ceremony for the new detachment, which serves Twillingate and surrounding communities. The new facility features state-of-the-art design and replaces the previous detachment which was over 50 years old. The ceremony included a ribbon cutting, followed by a tour of the detachment.

Assistant Commissioner Peter Clark, Commanding Officer of the RCMP NL, and Detachment Commander Corporal Kenneth Maher, were joined by Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame; Derek Bennett, Member of the House of Assembly for the District of Lewisporte-Twillingate; and Grant White, Mayor of Twillingate, as well as local residents and representatives from surrounding communities.

"I am delighted to be here in Twillingate today with our government and community partners and our employees to celebrate this new addition to the RCMP infrastructure in the province," said Assistant Commissioner Clark. "This new building represents our commitment to ensure the safety and security of both the residents and communities of the detachment area, providing a modern space for our operations and police officers."

RCMP employees led project management for the new detachment, with construction by LSG Construction of Gander. The building's design was first used in this province for the Whitbourne Detachment and will serve as a template for any future RCMP detachment projects in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Features of the new 565-square-meter building include state-of-the-art thermal design, automated lighting and plumbing fixtures, and a flexible design concept that will allow for future additions and renovations. The detachment also features a fully functional cell pavilion with secure cells, a breath-testing and fingerprinting area, and a secure bay for prisoner transfers. The new detachment became operational in March 2017.

RCMP officers work out of the detachment seven days a week, and front-counter service is available to the public Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To contact the Twillingate Detachment, call 709-884-2811.
