News release

A 34-year-old man, who was the subject of a water rescue on the Petitcodiac River, has been charged with a number of offences related to an incident previous to him being on the river.

On February 22, 2018, shortly before 6 a.m., Codiac RCMP responded to a complaint of an assault at a home on Salisbury Road in Moncton. When they arrived, the suspect had fled the scene. Shortly afterwards, a man was spotted on a large piece of ice floating in the Petitcodiac River. Emergency officials attempted to rescue the man but he managed to make it to shore safely on his own. He was then taken into custody.

On February 23, 2018, 34-year-old Mike Delahunt of Moncton appeared in Moncton Provincial Court and was charged with two counts of assault, one count of uttering threats, one count of damage to property and two counts of breach of probation. He was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing on February 26, 2018 at 1:30 p.m.

The investigation is continuing.
