Construction at the future RCMP Kings District Office/New Minas Detachment at 8833 Commercial St. continues to move ahead with window and brick installations nearing completion and exterior and interior work steadily progressing.

Outside, asphalt is being placed for the parking lots. Inside, painting, ceiling installation, drywall plastering and mechanical work is in progress on the first and second floors.

"With the window and brick installations nearly complete, you can get a clearer idea of how different spaces within the building will look," says Insp. Dan Morrow, Officer in Charge of Kings District RCMP. "You can really see now how spaces like the front lobby will have lots of natural light and will be a great space to serve our communities."

The new building brings together administrative units for RCMP Kings District and operational units for 73 full-time employees. This includes the Southwest Nova District Policing Officer, New Minas Detachment members, Major Crimes Unit, Traffic Services, General Investigation Section, Forensic Identification Services and Police Dog Services. The units will come together under one roof for improved operations and more efficient collaboration.

Construction began in October 2017. In November 2017, Nova Scotia RCMP hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at the site. Construction is expected to finish during the spring of 2019.
