News release

26 drivers have been given tickets for distracted driving following a month long operation in the communities of St. Stephen and McAdam.

During the month of May, the RCMP in the area put a concerted effort on education and enforcement of people using electronic devices while driving. Several traffic operations took place in and around the communities of St. Stephen and McAdam.

"Like people not wearing a seatbelt, speeding and impaired driving, we still see people operating electronic devices while driving despite it being against the law for several years now," says Sgt. Peter Stubbs with the St. Stephen RCMP Detachment. "We take a zero tolerance approach to people using their phones while driving. You will receive a ticket."

Using a handheld electronic device such as a phone or GPS, is considered distracted driving under the Motor Vehicle Act of New Brunswick. Drivers who violate the law receive a $172.50 fine.
