Charlie, RCMP Police Service Dog

RCMP in Happy Valley-Goose Bay are celebrating the successful career of one of its four-legged finest. Charlie, a Police Service Dog, is retiring this month after dedicating seven years of service to the RCMP.

PSD Charlie will remain with Cpl. Jason Muzzerall after his retirement, enjoying a relaxed life as part of the family. Charlie was the first service dog for Cpl. Muzzerall and the two have been a dynamic duo since Charlie was a seven-week-old ball of fur. They both finished training in December of 2011 and were officially posted in Thompson, Manitoba. Cpl. Muzzerall recalls the first call out with Charlie;

"It was our first call, first track and first catch. We had to travel behind a ski-doo in a toboggan to a cabin, track the suspect in the snow for about 2.5 km before locating him hiding in the woods. After we hiked back with the suspect in custody we rode back in the sled. I was laying down and Charlie was laying on top of me." said Cpl. Muzzerall. "I remember thinking this was awesome as the northern lights blazed across the sky as we rode in the sled back to our truck. That was my very first night with Charlie in Thompson and it was a sign of things to come."

Charlie was born for this job. He is a third generation RCMP purebred German Sheppard from the RCMP breeding program and was trained to track and search for people, drugs, firearms and other evidence in police investigations. Charlie has had many successful searches including a vehicle search in Thompson, Manitoba, where he located a large amount of cocaine behind the interior moulding and panels of a car.

The pair was posted to Happy-Valley Goose Bay in December 2015, and have been an important part of RCMP in Labrador. To mark the occasion of Charlie's retirement, the HVGB Detachment will be having a lunch celebration at 12:00 p.m. this Thursday, November 29. Joining in the celebration is Inspector Jim Elliot who will be presenting Charlie with a special token of appreciation.

In his retirement, Charlie looks forward to swimming, playing fetch, taking up the family sofa and enjoying his favorite snack, bacon!
