A recent string of incidents is prompting Yellowknife RCMP to remind citizens to lock their vehicles and not to leave keys in the ignition or valuables in plain sight when unattended.

RCMP have received multiple complaints over the last week of unknown persons entering unlocked vehicles and stealing small items such as sunglasses and loose change. Other incidents reportedly had vehicles taken from residences or work places because the keys had been left in the ignition.

One incident, between 11:30 pm and 2:30 am on the evening of Thursday, September 28th involved a black 2006 Ford F-150 pick-up truck believed to be stolen from the driveway of a residence in the Range Lake North neighborhood. RCMP officers located that vehicle a short while later abandoned near the intersection of Con Road and Forrest Drive where it is believed two suspects fled on foot. The investigation is ongoing.

In another incident on Sunday, October 1st at approximately 5am, a 2005 Ford Lariat work truck was believed to have been stolen from the former Giant Mine site. Officers located that vehicle abandoned with the keys in the ignition near the Tin Can Hill walking trails. Two suspects are also believed to have fled on foot. The investigation continues.

Yellowknife RCMP encourages the public to call police if they observe any suspicious activity. In addition, anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact Yellowknife RCMP at 867-669-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, www.nwtnutips.com, (click on "submit a web tip") or text: nwtnutips to 274637.
