Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

News release

On Saturday, December 2nd at approximately 4:20pm, Yellowknife RCMP received a call for service to assist a vehicle that reportedly went through the ice on Prosperous Lake, north-east of Yellowknife.

City of Yellowknife Fire Division and RCMP officers responded immediately and were able to reach the area by snow machine. An adult male and female and a child were located at the vehicle. They were rescued successfully and transported to Stanton Territorial Hospital with no serious injuries.

While the rescue was successful, this incident highlights the dangers of travel on unknown ice thickness and road or ice conditions. Motorists who venture into unknown areas of travel place themselves at risk, as well as those called to rescue them.

Yellowknife RCMP asks all drivers to take the precautions to prevent themselves from a dangerous situation on lakes, rivers and on the land travel.
