Sussex RCMP cracks down on distracted driving

May 30, 2017
Sussex, New Brunswick

News release

The Sussex RCMP is warning drivers to keep their full attention on the road, as police are stepping up efforts to curb distracted driving.

"People are continuing to use their cell phones while driving, even though it's against the law," says Sgt. Jim MacPherson of the Sussex RCMP Detachment. "Taking your eyes off the road for just a few seconds significantly increases your chances of being involved in a serious crash that can result in injury, or even death."

In 2016, 645 people were ticketed for distracted driving in RCMP New Brunswick jurisdiction.

Drivers who talk on their cell phones can face fines of $172.50 and three demerit points from their drivers' license.
