Summerside man sentenced for various crimes

James Joseph Gallant, a 63 year-old resident of Summerside, appeared in Provincial Court in Summerside on April 20th and was given a fine of $500.00 after pleading guilty to a charge of possession of oxycodone, under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act.

Mr. Gallant also entered a guilty plea to possessing more than one thousand grams of illegal cigarettes under the Provincial Tobacco Tax Act and he received a fine of $200.00 and a tax penalty of $ 4,000.00 In relation to the same amount of cigarettes, he received a $675.00 fine under the Federal Excise Act.

Mr. Gallant was charged following a search of a residence in Summerside on December 20th, 2016, by the Prince District Joint Forces Unit comprised of police officers from the RCMP, Summerside and Kensington Police Forces.

In an unrelated matter Mr. Gallant also entered a guilty plea to Possessing Stolen Property and received a 10-day jail sentence which will be served on an intermittent basis. In conjunction with the jail sentence, he was placed on probation for 12 months.
