Local RCMP Detachments took part in National Road Safety Week which is a road safety initiative which takes place each year across the country in an effort to make Canada's roads the safest in the world. The RCMP partnered with Provincial Highway Safety and Government Officials for both education and enforcement initiatives.

During the week, the RCMP throughout the Island strive to educate motorists in regards to unsafe and aggressive driving behaviours through an aggressive enforcement campaign. Enforcement efforts began on May 15th and run through the long weekend and end on May 22nd. Specific offences such as the lack of seatbelt usage, speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and aggressive driving infractions will be targeted.

As part of the campaign, there was an increase in policing presence on the roads involving check stops and roving patrols. There were 200 total charges ranging from speeding and aggressive driving, seat belt infractions, distracted driving charges and included four impaired driving charges.

It is hoped that people drive responsibly and safely when out enjoying warmer weather seasons. The RCMP encourage anyone who suspects a driver is impaired or witnesses any dangerous driving behaviour along the roads and highways to contact their local RCMP Detachment.
