RCMP Traffic Services in the Northwest Territories along with all local RCMP Detachments are making preparations for National Road Safety Week. This road safety initiative takes place each year across the country in an effort to make Canada's roads the safest in the world.
During that week, the RCMP throughout the Territories will strive to educate motorists in regards to unsafe and aggressive driving behaviors through an aggressive enforcement campaign. Enforcement efforts will begin on May 15th and run through the long weekend and end on May 22nd. Specific offences such as the lack of seatbelt usage, speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and aggressive driving infractions will be targeted.
As part of the campaign, motorists can expect to see an increase in policing presence on the roads involving check stops and roving patrols.
Last year there were 5 charges of impaired driving laid, over 180 driving infraction charges were laid, with just over 1100 vehicles stopped.
It is hoped that people drive responsibly and safely when out enjoying the first long weekend of the season. The RCMP encourage anyone who suspects a driver is impaired or witnesses any dangerous driving behavior along the roads and highways to contact their local RCMP Detachment.
