RCMP from Fort McPherson, Deline and Norman Wells have intercepted the flow of over-limit or illegal alcohol in the North District of the Northwest Territories.

As part of ongoing enforcement of a variety of laws and restrictions related to the transport and possession of illegal alcohol into communities in the RCMP's North District, RCMP members have conducted traffic stops and investigations. These investigations and the seizure of alcohol have resulted in preventing illegal alcohol from entering communities that have liquor restrictions or prohibitions.

On the evening of September 30, approximately 10:30 pm, Fort McPherson RCMP conducted a traffic check stop on the Dempster Highway. Approximately 20 vehicles were checked and a large quantity of illegal alcohol was seized. Charges were laid for open liquor. Firearms were also seized, with no charges at this time.

On the morning of Monday, October 2, Deline RCMP checked luggage at the airport and found a person with 12 beer bottles in their luggage. Upon further inspection, the 12 bottles were found to have been tampered with and filled with liquor (believed to be vodka). The alcohol was seized, no charges at this time.

A traffic check stop conducted shortly thereafter found a person in a vehicle to be in possession of 31 – 375 ml bottles of liquor, which was over limit.

In total, Deline seized 43 – 375 mls and 1 – 750 ml bottles of liquor. No charges at this time.

On the evening of Tuesday, October 3, Norman Wells RCMP investigated the suspected transport of illegal alcohol near the boat dock. Officers found and seized:
103 – 375 ml of liquor
109 cans of beer/liquor
7 – 1.14 ltr of liquor
No charges at this time.

"Protecting our communities from the harm of illegal alcohol is an important priority for the Northwest Territories RCMP. Every seizure of illegal alcohol is a reduction of potential harm by the transport and sale of illegal alcohol in our communities", states Marie York-Condon, NT RCMP Media Relations.
