Man charged with sexual assault and kidnapping

Whitehorse RCMP have charged a 25-year-old man with sexual assault and kidnapping in relation to two separate incidents that allegedly took place on September 29, 2017.

On October 3, 2017, Whitehorse RCMP received a complaint from a 30-year-old woman indicating that she had been sexually assaulted on September 29th while she was a passenger in a taxi.

A second sexual assault was reported on October 3, 2017 by a 19-year-old woman indicating that she had been driven to a rest area and sexually assaulted on September 29th, 2017 while she was a passenger in a taxi.

In both incidents, the victims reported having been approached by a male taxi driver who identified himself as "Jazz" while walking in Whitehorse, and were offered a ride, even after advising the driver that they did not have funds to pay for the transportation.

The driver, 25-year-old Jaspal Singh Tamber, was arrested on October 3, 2017.

He is facing the following charges:

  • 1 count of sexual assault in relation to the first incident;
  • 1 count of sexual assault and 1 count of kidnapping in relation to the second incident.

Mr. Tamber appeared in court on October 4th, 2017 and was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, October 6th at 1:00 pm.
