Man charged with attempted murder

A 54-year-old man from Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador (N.L.), has been charged with attempted murder following an investigation by the Channel-Port-aux-Basques RCMP Detachment and RCMP Serious Crime Unit.

At approximately 10:00 p.m., on July 12, 2017, the RCMP responded to a call regarding an injured man on Main Street West in Port-aux-Basques, N.L. Police and paramedics responded to the call.

Preliminary investigation determined that a 39-year-old male from Channel-Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador, had suffered apparent stab wounds to his body. He was transported to hospital where he received medical attention and was later released.

As a result, Thomas Kavanagh was arrested and has been charged with Attempted Murder. He appeared in Stephenville Provincial court earlier this afternoon. He was remanded in custody pending a court appearance on July 17, 2017.

The investigation is continuing.
