2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the Guns & Hoses Blood Challenge hosted by the Codiac Regional RCMP and Moncton Fire Department to draw attention to the importance of donating blood.
Police officers and firefighters hold a friendly competition to see how many of its employees come to donate blood. The Guns & Hoses Blood Challenge will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on December 20, 2017.
Anyone wishing donate can go to the Canadian Blood Services Clinic located at 500 Mapleton Road in Moncton, as all blood types are required. No appointment is necessary.
"Canadian Blood Services typically sees a decline in donations around the holidays," says Cpl. Lynn Saulnier of the Codiac Regional RCMP. "As police and firefighters we know that we could be at an incident where an individual is seriously injured and requires blood to help save their life, that's why this event is 20 years strong."
Canadian Blood Services says that one person, seriously injured in a car crash, could require as many as 50 blood donations to help save their life.
Each unit of blood that is donated helps save the lives of three people. The challenge hopes to collect 96 units of blood during the one day event.
