First responders simulate crash to illustrate devastating effects of impaired driving

High school students and members of the public will have an up-close look at what happens when there's a crash involving an impaired driver.

The mock crash will happen at the Caraquet Cultural Centre (Carrefour de la Mer) on May 29, 2017. This year, there will be two presentations – one for graduating students at 9:30 a.m., and one for the general public at 6:30 p.m. The public presentation is offered free of charge, but it is restricted to those aged 16 and older as content of the demonstration will be realistic and could be upsetting to young people.

"It's a pretty gruesome sight, but we feel it's important for people to get a real sense of what first responders encounter when there's a crash involving an impaired driver and someone not wearing their seatbelt," says Cst. Raymond Gautreau of the Caraquet RCMP.

"That's why we hold this event every year in May, right before graduation. We really want to get the message home to graduating students that it's never okay to drink and driver, no matter the occasion."

People attending the public presentation are asked to be seated by 6:20 p.m. on May 29. There will be no late entry so as not to disrupt the presentation.
