News release

A dog being left in a vehicle for over an hour, in the parking lot of the Sea Glass festival in Souris at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday afternoon resulted in a Souris area man being charged under the new Animal Welfare Act.

The dog was released from the vehicle by the RCMP once they arrived, several attempts by festival staff to locate the dog's owner were unsuccessful. The dog was beginning to show signs of distress and immediately exited the vehicle once it was able to. Festival staff were able to collect the dog and keep it safe until the owner arrived back at the vehicle.

The man was issued a $575 fine under the new legislation and given a future court date if he wished to dispute this matter.

The RCMP and Provincial Animal Protection Officers and the P.E.I. Humane Society urge the public to make alternate arrangements when travelling with pets. Ensure they are not left in closed vehicles for any length of time especially in the hottest part of the day where temperatures can become extreme in minutes.
