Crime Stoppers and the Financial and Consumer Services Commission (FCNB) are addressing a very serious issue: financial abuse and exploitation of older New Brunswickers. This type of abuse is especially harmful because seniors are more likely to rely on investment income to provide for their day-to-day expenses. Financial abuse and exploitation of seniors is also a largely under-reported crime.
Seventy-seven per cent of suspected senior financial abuse went unreported last year. People may not report financial abuse because they are embarrassed, afraid of what might happen, have fear of retaliation, loyalty to their family, or a hope to get their money back.
