In 1993, as a component of the Division Headquarters relocation from Toronto to London, the Toronto East Detachment in Bowmanville was opened. For over two decades the Toronto East Detachment was the base of operations for such programs as Customs and Excise, Immigration and Passport, Federal Enforcement, Drug Enforcement, Anti-corruption Unit, Mandatory Training, and Serious and Organized Crime.

As part of ongoing analysis of operations and examining the effectiveness and efficiency of maintaining numerous RCMP sites, in November 2016 a decision was reached to close the detachment. For the last several months work has been completed which resulted in the redeployment of detachment personnel and a realignment of the area of responsibility previously covered by Toronto East. On May 4th, 2017 an open house was held for the public, local businesses, and policing partners to show appreciation for their support to the RCMP and its employees.

On October 5th, 2017 the detachment was officially closed to the public. "O" Division Commanding Officer, A/Commr. Jennifer Strachan led the salute as the flag was lowered for the last time. Numerous employees who served at Toronto East were present for the ceremony to commemorate the end of the Toronto East era.
