March is Fraud Prevention Month and Nova Scotia RCMP is asking you to hang up on phone-ys.

With tax season upon us, there has been an increase in reported fraud from scammers posing as representatives of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Residents have received telephone calls, emails, text messages and letters from fraudsters demanding personal and banking information. Typically, scammers promise a refund or threaten arrest if you don't pay up!

If you're contacted by someone claiming to be a representative of the CRA and demanding information, remember that the CRA never asks for personal information in this manner. Hang up the phone and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) by phone at 1-888-495-8501 (9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time) or online at www.antifraudcentre.ca.

This realistic scam is taking hard-earned money from Canadians on a daily basis. Help protect family and friends by sharing this message and starting the conversation about fraud.

Most fraud goes unreported. If you or a family member has fallen victim to fraud, report it to your local police service and to the CAFC. Report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) by phone at 1-888-495-8501 (9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time) or online at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
