Port au Port fire scene to be secured and monitored overnight for hot spots

RCMP continues to guard the scene of this morning's fire at the Abbott & Haliburton Building Centre in Port au Port, Newfoundland and Labrador.

At approximately 5:00 a.m., Bay St. George RCMP was dispatched to a fire at the Building Centre and, upon arrival, officers found the building fully engulfed in flames. The Port au Port Fire Department was on scene and fighting the blaze.

The fire was extinguished earlier this afternoon however the building was fully consumed by the fire. There have been no reported injuries.

Fire fighters will remain at the scene to deal with potential hot spots. RCMP officers, with the assistance of local Ground Search and Rescue, will guard and secure the scene overnight.

Front Road and Main Road in Port au Port East were closed for an extended period earlier today as fire fighters brought the fire under control. Front Road remains open however only local traffic is being permitted along Main Road at this time.

Investigators have not yet been able to access the scene and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
