News release

"G" Division Traffic Services, along with RCMP Detachments within the Northwest Territories concluded Operation Gingerbread on January 1st, 2017.

This year's Operation Gingerbread saw 22 people charged with impaired driving compared to 29 for the same time period last year. Administrative Suspensions issued to drivers who were driving a motor vehicle when impaired also saw a decrease over last year's numbers.

"Impaired driving is an entirely preventable cause of death and injuries that has immense costs and devastating effects in our communities" states Cpl Todd Scaplen, G Division Traffic Services.

Altogether, close to 1500 vehicles were checked during Operation Gingerbread, which contributed to the RCMP's goal to keep the roads of the Northwest Territories safe. Numerous Motor Vehicle Act infractions, Criminal Code charges, and seizure of illegal drugs and alcohol also encompassed the month long campaign.

The RCMP thanks those municipal agencies that assisted with check stops through the holiday season. The public is thanked for their increased awareness and vigilance in contacting their local detachments when suspecting they have observed an impaired driver.

"One tragic accident is too many. Together we can make a difference, thank you", states Cpl Todd Scaplen.
