Hay River RCMP respond to house fire which results in one fatality

Hay River RCMP responded to a call for service on the K'atl'odeeche First Nation Reserve near Hay River, NT.

RCMP arrived on scene at approximately 5:30 pm on Wednesday, February 15, to find a house fully engulfed in flames. The scene was attended by the Hay River Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services, Hay River RCMP and RCMP Traffic Services.

One female was removed from the premises and transported to the Hay River Regional Health Centre in Hay River for medical attention.

Hay River Fire Department was able to contain the fire, and there was no damage to neighbouring properties. Once the fire had been extinguished, Hay River Fire Department was able to enter the building and confirm one person was deceased inside.

The RCMP have secured the scene and are holding it pending the arrival of investigators. The investigation will include Hay River RCMP, Northwest Territories RCMP Forensic Identification Unit, Northwest Territories RCMP Major Crimes Unit, Office of the Fire Marshall and the NWT Coroner Services.

The Forensic Identification Unit, Major Crimes Unit and the Office of the Fire Marshall are travelling to Hay River to conduct the investigation. Weather conditions in Yellowknife and Hay River have contributed to a delay in the travel.
