Yellowknife RCMP apprehend suspects in attempted thefts in City

Yellowknife RCMP are reminding the public take preventative measures after a number of attempted thefts in the City of Yellowknife.

On Wednesday, February 15 at approximately 5:00 AM, Yellowknife RCMP received a call for service for suspicious activity in and around vehicles and homes in the Niven area. RCMP responded and apprehended two suspects. It appeared that several vehicles had been entered illegally, properties were trespassed and snow machines were tampered with. RCMP have charged one suspect, and charges are pending for the second suspect.

Charged is Jeremy Kuneyuna (22) of Yellowknife, with:

  • Theft under $5000 S. 334(b)
  • Trespassing at Night S.177 – Ten (10) counts
  • Failure to comply with a probation order S. 733.1(1) – Two (2) counts
  • Motor vehicle theft (snowmobile) S. 333.1 – Three (3) counts

The second suspect, a 22 year old male, has been released from police custody with charges pending and a court date of March 28, 2017.

In a separate incident, on Tuesday, February 7, at approximately 5:00 AM Yellowknife RCMP received a call for service for suspicious activity in and around vehicles in the Borden area. RCMP responded and tracked a suspect and apprehended him. The 22 year old male suspect remains in custody with charges pending, and a court date of February 28, 2017.

Police observed tracks to 30 to 40 vehicles on this incident, in an apparent attempt to gain entry to vehicles.

With these incidents occurring in different parts of the City, it is important to safeguard valuables in all locations. Members of the public are reminded to:

  • Lock your vehicle.
  • Do not leave valuable items or money in your vehicle, especially in plain view.
  • Never leave any keys inside of your vehicle.
  • Park vehicles in well lighted areas where possible.

It is also valuable for the public to be aware that under the provisions of the Northwest Territories Motor Vehicles Act, it is unlawful to leave an unattended vehicle running, unlocked, with the keys in the ignition.

Yellowknife RCMP is committed to reducing property crime. The public can help, they are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the RCMP.
