Fort Providence, Northwest Territories

News release

On February 4th, 2017, at approximately 8:45 am, Fort Providence RCMP received a report of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 1 at kilometre 292. A semi-tractor trailer had been struck from behind by a minivan. RCMP members from Fort Providence and Fort Simpson responded along with the Fort Providence and Hay River and Fort Simpson Fire Departments.

The driver of the minivan sustained non-life threatening injuries and had to be extracted from the vehicle by fire and emergency medical personnel. There were three occupants other than the driver in the minivan who sustained minor injuries. All injured parties were transported to Stanton Hospital via helicopter from the scene. The driver of the semi was uninjured.

The matter is still under investigation however it appears that poor visibility was a major factor due to heavy blowing snow. Alcohol/drug use and speed are not suspected to have been factors.

The RCMP would like to thank all emergency personnel and volunteers who assisted at the scene.
