Last February 5, officers of the RCMP Lower St. Lawrence Detachment arrested a man and seized illegal tobacco products and a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan after they intercepted a vehicle near Rimouski.

The vehicle search resulted in the seizure of 47 cases of cartons of illegal tobacco representing the equivalent of 470,000 contraband cigarettes intended for the Gaspé region and Atlantic Provinces market.

A 45-year-old man from Montréal's south shore was arrested on location. He could face charges of possession of a tobacco product not stamped in accordance with the Excise Act 2001.

It is illegal to possess or sell tobacco products that are not packaged or stamped as required by Canadian law. The illicit tobacco trade presents a threat to the health and safety of Canadians. People need to be aware that they are funding criminal activity when they purchase contraband tobacco products.

If you have information on the sale of illegal tobacco products or other suspected illicit activity, please contact the RCMP at 1 800 771-5401 or Crime Stoppers at 1 800 711-1800.
