The RCMP Office of the Ethics Advisor is partnering with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) Ethics Committee and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Police Image and Ethics Committee to mitigate ethical risks in law enforcement.
The RCMP Office of the Ethics Advisor continued its work of underpinning values and ethics in the Force’s operational and administrative functions. The approach of putting ethics into practice ranged from the direct involvement in the planning of major events (e.g. G8 Summit) to advancing a pilot project to staff Regional Ethics Counsellors. Business lines continued to receive support for identifying ethical considerations within policies and memoranda of understanding. Similarly, they were supported in the delivery of ethics education to their specialized operational and administrative units. The leadership continuum from junior to senior employees remained a focus of ethics education efforts. An ethical leadership construct is being developed for use in the selection process of the officer cadre. Employees also learned more about the RCMP processes related to the Public Servants Disclosure Protection Act through ethics education and communications initiatives.
RCMP-wide consultation with employees and managers on the draft Treasury Board Code of Conduct raised awareness, contributed to employee engagement and laid the groundwork for an employee advisory group on ethics.
