Purchasing information

Thank you for your interest. The Police Dog Service Training Centre (PDSTC) has its own breeding program. On occasion, dogs from the program are sold to the public as pets. They may range in age from eight-weeks old to adults.

Very few puppies are available for sale. They are sent across the country where RCMP members who are interested in becoming dog handlers raise them. At any time during their rearing, the dogs may be removed from the program if deemed unsuitable for police work. At this time, PDSTC looks for good homes.

PDSTC has quite an extensive list of potential adopters. We are looking for, and reserve the right to find the best homes for our dogs. It is not a question of how long one’s name has been on the list, but rather what is best for the dogs. People living on farms or acreages do have an advantage.

The dogs that are up for adoption have no "police" training. They have usually received some informal obedience training and have been raised differently than a family pet. Generally, the dogs are very high drive, energetic dogs. When first acquired, they will require a lot of attention and should not be left unsupervised in houses or vehicles. Crate trained, they are quite content to be in a kennel crate for limited periods. Certain facets of their upbringing have been geared to potential police training; therefore, the dogs will require more time to develop the “manners” of a family pet.

The cost is $500 for a puppy and prices increase for older dogs. Our selling price is based on a cost recovery system. Simply put, we try to recoup what has been invested in the dog; hence the reason why older dogs are the more expensive.

We do not allow breeding of our dogs. We require that the dogs be spayed or neutered at the new owner's expense within 90 days of purchase. Owners must incur the shipping costs as well as the cost of a crate, if required.

If you would like to add your name to our list, please complete the request form and fax, email or mail it back to the address listed below. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me. Should a dog come available that is suitable for your family situation and environment, you will receive a call from PDSTC. Request forms for potential dog buyers are retained for one year. If you are interested in keeping your name on our list after this time, please submit a new request form.

Sincerely,

Sgt. Vince Hammer
