The RCMP Police Dog Service Breeding Program produces puppies from Czech working dog lines. The puppies are tested at seven weeks of age to determine if they possess certain traits that could potentially be developed into Police Service Dogs. Those that do not demonstrate the traits required for police work are sold as pets at this time.
Puppies that do exhibit the qualities we are looking for are subsequently placed with members of the RCMP in our Imprinting Program. These are police officers interested in becoming future dog handlers and are responsible for the development of these dogs. These Potential Police Service Dogs are socialized/familiarized with many different environments and situations to allow for an easy transition should they be accepted into a formal training course. They do not enter into a formal “training program” however a number of exercises in obedience and tracking are conducted to determine their potential for police work. Defence and prey drives are assessed and developed accordingly.
The dogs are evaluated at 4, 8 and 12 months to determine their suitability for police work. Based upon the evaluation of the dog’s potential, it may be removed from our imprinting program and offered for sale, as a pet, to the general public.
