Statement to the media

REGINA, June 12, 2009, 11:00 – Good afternoon. My name is Assistant Commissioner Roger Brown and I am the Commanding Officer of “Depot” Division. Standing next to me is Dr. Warren Dufour, RCMP Health Services Officer for the North West Region. I thank you for joining us today. I will read a brief statement and then take your questions.

As of this time, there are three confirmed cases of Influenza A (H1N1) at Depot. Nineteen cadets are also exhibiting flu-like symptoms bringing the total of cadets in isolation to 22. All cases are mild. Two cadets, previously isolated with flu-like symptoms, have been released for duty as their condition has improved.

The Regina Qu’Appelle Health District and Dr. Dufour are closely monitoring the situation and have put in place several protocols to minimize the risk of spread of the virus within Depot and the surrounding communities. Protocols include:

  • Isolating cadets showing flu-like symptoms
  • Sanitizing living areas
  • Widely distributing sanitizing products and messaging information with regards to proper hygiene and flu-prevention measures
  • Restricting access to the RCMP Academy
  • Postponing or cancelling non-training activities
  • Encouraging cadets to stay on base at this time

Training activities are proceeding normally. Any future decision regarding training will be based on the well-being of our cadets and employees.

At “Depot” Division, we are aware that we are part of the larger Regina community and as such, we will keep you informed as events unfold.

Thank you. I will now take your questions.
