Family and Relationship Violence

Family violence occurs in relationships of intimacy, kinship, dependency, or trust. It ranges from physical, emotional, financial, and sexual abuse to neglect. It includes any family relationship: spousal, common-law, children, and seniors.

Approach

The RCMP follows a collaborative and cooperative approach to addressing family violence by:

• raising public awareness on risk factors and effects of family and relationship violence.
• leading or partnering in community-based workshops on victims’ issues, sexual assault, and relationship violence.
• assisting communities in using problem-solving approaches to family violence.
• delivering family violence-related training to its members, victims’ services coordinators and community volunteers.

Publications

In collaboration with the National Clearinghouse on Family Violence and other partners, the RCMP has developed the following public awareness resources:

• Stopping Child Abuse - Protecting Our Future

Funding

The Family Violence Initiative is an ongoing federal commitment to reduce the occurrence of family violence in Canada.

This year the RCMP will distribute funds through the Federal Family Violence Initiative to:

• RCMP detachments;
• non-profit community organizations; and
• municipal, provincial and territorial partners

Eligible organizations and partners are invited to submit proposals to the RCMP to help fund:

• activities that aim to prevent high risk groups from re-offending;
• initiatives that foster crime prevention in Aboriginal communities;
• conferences, seminars, presentations or workshops that aim to prevent and promote public awareness about relationship and family violence;
• activities that assist victims of crime; or
• initiatives that promote law enforcement activities of the RCMP.
