Important Notice - Government of Canada Defers Implementation of the Firearms Marking Regulations

The requirements of the Firearms Marking Regulations are deferred to December 1, 2018. For more information, see the Regulations Amending the Firearms Marking Regulations in the Canada Gazette.

  • The Firearms Marking Regulations are deferred until December 1, 2018. The associated announcement is available at: Regulations Amending the Firearms Marking Regulations.
  • Government of Canada Extends Firearms Licensing Compliance Measure:
    • The Government of Canada has extended, until December 31, 2017, the Order Declaring an Amnesty Period. It applies to individual owners of non-restricted firearms anywhere in Canada who had a firearms licence issued under the Firearms Act, but who let it expire on or after January 1, 2004.
    • Provided these individuals are attempting to come back into firearms licensing compliance, the Order gives them the opportunity to do so without risk of prosecution.

  • Two additional provisions of the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act came into force on September 2, 2015:
    • The elimination of the Possession Only Licence (POL) and conversion of all existing POLs to Possession and Acquisition Licences (PALs); and,
    • The Authorization to Transport (ATT) becoming a condition of a licence for certain routine and lawful activities.
