Government of Canada Reinstates Firearms Licence Fees

Fee waiver for renewals of restricted or prohibited licences has expired.

Implications

On September 17, 2012, the fee waiver for renewing a Possession Only Licence (POL) or Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) with restricted or prohibited firearm privileges expired. Individuals who renew their restricted or prohibited class POL or PAL on or after September 18, 2012, will be required to pay the renewal fee of $60 (POL) or $80 (PAL). Individuals who are adding restricted privileges to their licence will also be required to pay a fee.

The more limited fee waiver for licences with only non-restricted firearm privileges continues in effect until May 16, 2013. This waiver applies to:

  • individuals renewing their Possession Only Licence (POL) or Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL),
  • individuals upgrading their POL to a PAL,
  • individuals obtaining a new POL or PAL after their previous one expired, or
  • minors who renew their Minor's Licence.

The fee waiver does not apply to:

  • individuals who are renewing licences with restricted or prohibited firearm privileges,
  • individuals obtaining their first licence,
  • individuals who held a minors licence and are applying for a PAL,
  • individuals who are obtaining a new licence after their licence was refused or revoked,
  • individuals obtaining a licence after the expiry of a firearms prohibition order, or
  • firearms businesses.
