Priorities

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is Canada's National Police Service. Proud of our traditions and confident in meeting future challenges, we commit to preserve the peace uphold the law and provide quality service in partnership with our communities.

K Division of the RCMP is the geographic area within the boundaries of Alberta.

Under the Provincial Police Service agreement, the RCMP provides policing services to approximately one fifth of Alberta’s population. Additionally, many of Alberta’s municipalities contract with the RCMP under the Alberta Police Act. Under recent changes to Alberta’s legislation, municipalities with a population exceeding 5,000 are required to address their policing needs. Other locations and areas now automatically receive policing under the Provincial Police Service Agreement.

Addressing Alberta’s Priorities

K Division and the Alberta Solicitor General collaboratively develop the Business Plan, to further Alberta’s policing priorities:

  • Safe Communities,
  • Aboriginal Policing,
  • Serious and Violent Crime.

The RCMP/Solicitor General Business Plan articulates many initiatives that address particular areas within the above three priorities. Specific initiatives vary from client focused services involving public policy development, to intelligence led priority setting in organized crime investigations. Effective policies and programs are similarly addressed in Traffic Services initiatives to reduce fatality and injury collisions, and family violence initiatives to reduce spousal abuse.

As well, K Division supports the strategic priorities of the RCMP, which are:

  • Organized Crime,
  • Terrorism,
  • Youth,
  • Serving Canada’s Aboriginal Peoples, and
  • International Police Services.

Each of the provincial policing priorities in Alberta overlap with one or more of the strategic priorities of the RCMP nationally. Together, all of the efforts both provincially and nationally support the goal of ‘Safe Homes, Safe Communities.’
