Commanding Officer's Message

D/C R.R. KnechtThank you for visiting the web site for K Division RCMP. In the weeks and months to come, we will continue to add new information about the policing services we provide for Albertans in both rural areas and municipalities.

The RCMP operates as the provincial police service for Alberta under a contract with the Solicitor General of Alberta. In addition, we provide policing services for approximately 60 municipalities under contracts directly with each of the municipalities. In RCMP vernacular, this is called “contract policing.”

Alberta is the second-largest contract policing province in the country and we have a long, proud history of policing in this province.

Our members demonstrate their strong commitment to Alberta every day as they police its cities, towns and rural areas, as they initiate and lead proactive community-based policing initiatives and as they play an active role in the communities they call home.

The RCMP is committed to policing that is intelligence-led, integrated and community-based.

Integrated policing essentially means that instead of working in an isolated silo, we reach out to our partners in policing and in our communities to more effectively address safety and security issues in the communities we serve. On a daily basis we work with our policing partners in Alberta - including the large and small municipal police services, municipal and county governments and administrators, the Alberta Solicitor General’s Office, and various others. Some examples of this integrated approach include:

  • the joint RCMP-Edmonton Police Service Green Team which investigates and dismantles marihuana grow operations across Northern Alberta;
  • the Integrated Response to Organized Crime which consists of RCMP, Edmonton and Calgary Police Service members targeting the highest echelons of organized crime in the province; and
  • the Rocky Mountain Integrated Border Enforcement Team which is a multi-agency law enforcement team targeting cross-border criminal activity.

Intelligence-led is an approach to tackling crime that is steered by information gathered about criminal activities. Instead of solely focussing on individual criminal acts, an intelligence-led approach results in a more strategic plan and supports addressing the roots of criminal activity, instead of just the symptoms. For example, instead of just targeting street-level drug dealers, an intelligence-led and strategic approach includes dedicating resources to targeting those who supply the drugs to the street-level dealers or import the drugs into Alberta. Or, instead of exclusively targeting methamphetamine users, the RCMP in Alberta are taking an active role in teaching educators, social workers, government and parents about the dangers and symptoms of use in a bid to reduce the infiltration of the horrible drug into Alberta.

K Division and its members are committed to community-based policing, a philosophical approach that emphasizes the policing priorities of the community and its citizens. Our Divisional plans are based on the policing priorities established by the Alberta Government, by the municipalities we serve under direct contract and by the National RCMP.

Each of the 107 RCMP detachments in Alberta develop annual business plans in consultation with the communities they serve. The detachment plans also incorporate the three provincial policing priorities established by the Alberta Solicitor General:

  1. Promoting Safe Communities in Alberta;
  2. Aboriginal Policing; and
  3. Alberta Serious and Violent Crime Strategy.

More information on these priorities, the RCMP national priorities and how the provincial and national priorities intersect can be found under the Policing Priorities section of this web site.

Other interesting information you will find on this site include:

  • Victim Services pages which features important information for any victim of crime and useful links - listed under Community Programs/Services;
  • Listing of K Division Districts and Detachments with addresses and contact phone numbers;
  • Corporate documents such as the K Division annual report, business plan and environmental scan; and
  • Information on the Alberta Summer Student program which enables successful applicants to learn about being a Mountie by working at a detachment for the summer.

As I indicated above, additional pages will continue to be added in the future, so please visit us again.

Thank you for your interest in K Division RCMP.

R.R. (Rod) Knecht, Deputy Commissioner
